THOUSANDS FLOCK TO STATE PALACE FOR NIGHT PRAYERS

Aug 10: Palace doors are normally open to public during Hari Raya open houses  held by the Agong or state royalties, where Malaysians willingly stand in long queues to enjoy free food as well as to get 'duit Raya' packets.

However, in what is believed to be a first in the country, the doors of the Kelantan palace in Kubang Kerian were opened to the public last night, not for food or green packets.

Tens of thousands of people turned up there to join Kelantan ruler, Sultan Muhammad V, in a special programme filled with prayers and religious lectures called 'Qiam With Me' ('Qiam' means 'standing' to denote prayer).

The extraordinary response from the public saw the palace's Dewan Jubli Perak filled to the brim, while throngs of people were seen unable to make way into the hall.

The programme commenced with the Isha prayer, followed by the superogatory Tarawih prayer.

Also present were state leaders, including Menteri Besar Tuan Guru Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.

In the wee hours of the morning, the crowd joined for the much recommended 'Qiyamullail', involving prayers and recitations of the Qur'an which lasted just before dawn. Qiyamullail was regularly practised by the Prophet and is highly recommended in order to get closer to God.

The programme ended after Sahur (pre-dawn meal during Ramadan) and the Subuh congregation
