Sep 4: MCA today launched its latest attack on Islam with a claim by one of its Central Committee members suggesting that under Islamic laws, celebration of Christmas will be prohibited while the non-Muslims would be denied their rights, including to rear pigs.
In a statement condemning opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim for "bowing down to PAS" by not interfering in Kelantan's plans to introduce Islamic criminal laws in the state, Loh Seng Kok, who is deputy chairman of the party's Publicity bureau, said Anwar's stand showed what would be in store under a Pakatan Rakyat government.
"In giving his consent, Anwar has also implied that Pakatan will impose similar enactments such as the prohibition of swine rearing, banning Christmas celebrations, shutting down the casino at Genting Highlands and also ceasing lucky draws, etc in the country without the need to amend the Federal Constitution," he wrote.
Loh claimed that Anwar had on September 1 met PAS Murshidul Am Tuan Guru Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat and "elders from the PAS Syura Council", before declaring that he would not have any objection to "PAS hudud law" in any states in Malaysia.
The statement is the latest attack by the Chinese-only party in its campaign to regain lost Chinese support. Public surveys and opinions polls have repeatedly shown that majority of Chinese voters would shun the party again at the coming elections. In 2008, the party won only 15 parliamentary seats, less than half of seats it had since 2004.
According to Loh, any implementation of Islamic laws side-by-side with the civil laws would invite chaos.
"Disorder and chaos might also be created as there are no uniform regulations or laws governing the proper administration of Malaysia towards the various ethnicities, religion professed and cultures," he added.
He also called on DAP "not to simply give assurances to the public" that it did not support PAS's plans, but must also plug any loophole for the implementation of "PAS hudud law" in PR's Buku Jingga, which outlines the coalition's immediate reforms after coming to power at the Federal level
